For a shared Mac, prioritize an obvious off switch, a limited session, and a clear handover. The best fit is the tool the next person can understand and stop. Test the exact shared setup rather than assuming one person’s preferences apply to everyone.
Define who needs the Mac awake
A shared desk changes the selection question. A tool that suits a single-person reading session may confuse the next person if it keeps moving the pointer after the original task ends.
Write down the use: a supervised demonstration, a reference during a workshop, or a task that the next person will continue. Agree who starts the session, who ends it, and what should happen before another person uses the computer.

Compare the stop controls first
Ask a person unfamiliar with the setup to identify how to stop it. For a dongle, that may be a physical button or removal. A mechanical platform may need its own switch. An app should provide a discoverable on/off or quit control.

Check startup and session assumptions
Review launch-at-login behavior and any recurring schedules before using a shared machine. Preferences that were convenient yesterday may be surprising during someone else’s session today.
Where people use separate Mac accounts, test in the account intended for the task. Do not infer permission, startup, or control behavior in another account from a single successful test. On a managed computer, agree on an approved setup with the person responsible for it.

Make the handover visible
- Confirm that the original task has finished or is ready to hand over.
- Stop the awake or movement session.
- Check that no temporary click or scroll automation remains active.
- Tell the next person about any setting intentionally left changed.
- Return the Mac to the agreed normal routine.
